PROJECT DESCRIPTION
South Korean drummer Sun Mi Hong and Scottish trumpeter Alistair Payne lead the New Amsterdam Jazz-supported project "Mengelberg Meets Korea," a unique initiative aimed at fostering connections between the South Korean and Dutch music scenes while emphasizing cultural exchange and education.
The project featured a 2022 tour to South Korea, where the Edison Award-winning Sun Mi Hong (drums), Alistair Payne (trumpet), Benjamin Herman (alto sax), and Ernst Glerum (bass) brought the music of legendary Dutch jazz musician Misha Mengelberg to South Korean audiences. Alongside South Korean musicians SunJae Lee (alto saxophone) and Youngwoo Lee (piano), they performed and taught, sharing their expertise and celebrating the shared artistry of both cultures.
Upon returning to the Netherlands, the ensemble recorded the music and played additional concerts. This project was organized in collaboration with DutchCulture and formed part of the celebrations marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and the Netherlands.
